Statement on Ukraine
The Jewish Council for Racial Equality (JCORE) views with great concern the prospect of intensified conflict in Ukraine. War inevitably results in indescribable horror for countless people, many of whom could become refugees.
JCORE will join with other organisations in asking the UK government to take our fair share of any refugees from this area, and we hope that both the European and international community will also take their fair share.
At the same time, we need to put into place a fairer asylum system in the UK. This means making major amendments to the Nationality and Borders Bill, which is currently going through Parliament. This legislation will result in a less fair asylum system and create additional hardship for many refugees fleeing for safety to the UK.
We call on the UK government to work with refugee organisations to put into place an emergency resettlement programme for Ukrainian refugees, should the need arise. We urge the government to also use this opportunity to amend the Nationality and Borders Bill, to create secure, safe and legal routes for others fleeing from violence and tyranny.
