Statement on recent proposals for offshore asylum processing centres

“The Jewish Council for Racial Equality (JCORE) is deeply appalled by the leaked proposals to establish offshore asylum processing centres in third countries. Such cruel plans are surely not a sign of the more ‘fair, humane, compassionate and outward-looking Home Office’ that the Home Secretary promised in the wake of the Windrush scandal, and would likely violate international refugee law.

Vulnerable refugees arriving in the UK should be welcomed with compassion and kindness, and such shocking, unethical proposals would be a cruel and shameful way to treat those who have fled conflict and persecution. These plans will also do nothing to stop those forced into taking dangerous journeys to safety - if the government is truly serious about making our asylum system more just, then it must act to provide more safe and legal routes to this country, extend its refugee resettlement schemes and ensure that asylum seekers in the UK are provided with resources and accommodation that allow them to live in dignity.”
