Statement on comments made by Sir Bill Wiggin MP
“The Jewish Council for Racial Equality (JCORE) is deeply appalled by Sir Bill Wiggin MP’s divisive and inflammatory remarks, which we urge him to retract and apologise for. Politicians cannot pick and choose which refugee groups they are willing to support based on nationality, or method of entry to this country.
Such awful comments dehumanize vulnerable people who are in urgent need of protections, and bring to mind the delegitimisation of Jewish refugees arriving in this country in the 20th century. It is disturbing that when responding to Mr Wiggin, the Prime Minister failed to condemn such dangerous remarks.
As it stands, the regressive Nationality and Borders Bill will do nothing to prevent refugees from being forced into taking dangerous journeys. Appallingly, it would also criminalize all refugees, including Ukrainians, taking irregular routes to safety in this country. If MPs are serious about stopping small boat crossings, they must act and support amendments to the bill which would introduce safe and legal routes.”
