Rabbis call for more refugee children to be allowed to come to the UK
More than 50 rabbis have signed a letter calling on the government not to abandon the Dubs scheme to bring lone child refugees into the UK.
Referring to the Kindertransport, the letter, initiated by the Jewish Council for Racial Equality (JCORE) calls on the government to fulfil its obligations to the Dubs Amendment to the Immigration Act (2016); and to ensure that family reunification, under the Dublin Regulation, works far more effectively, so that lone refugee children can be speedily reunited with close members of their family in the UK.
Dr Edie Friedman, JCORE’s Executive Director said, “Many in the Jewish community are shocked by the shameful way the government has reneged on its legal and ethical commitment to rescue some of these desperately vulnerable children."
Signatories to the letter include Laura Janner-Klausner, Senior Rabbi to Reform Judaism; Rabbi David Mason from Muswell Hill Synagogue; Rabbi Richard Jacobi, Co-Chair of the Rabbinic Conference of Liberal Judaism; and Rabbi Josh Levy, Chair of the Assembly of Reform Rabbis.
