“Thousands of people are forced to spend years living in abject poverty on the streets of Britain 's cities after fleeing persecution in their own countries..... The destitute have no access to help from the state as they have not been granted asylum, yet they prefer to stay in Britain rather than return home because they fear being tortured or killed.”           The Independent, 22.10.07

JCORE Action Against Destitution

Tens of thousands of people, including children, are living amongst us in abject poverty. They are homeless, with no money for the basic necessities of life, they have limited access to health care and their children can't go to school.

Who are they?

They are asylum seekers who have been refused permission to stay in the UK , but cannot be returned to their home countries.

They are no longer entitled to any subsistence-level support.  But they are not allowed to work to support themselves and their families either. They live precarious and vulnerable lives, depending on others for everything.

You can help in two ways:

WRITE A LETTER:

Write to your MP expressing your concern about this humanitarian problem on our own doorstep, and urging the Government to reverse its policy on withdrawing support from refused asylum seekers.   You can use or adapt this sample letter .

PROVIDE PRACTICAL SUPPORT:

Help us ensure an ongoing supply of the basic necessities - groceries, toiletries, clothing - by fundraising or setting up a group to source the goods. You can make this both fun and effective!  Find out how HERE
